E33| Innovating Beyond Boundaries: Ryan Campion on 3D Printing, Leading Through Uncertainty, and What It REALLY Means to "Have Your Back"

(You can also view us on Spotify or listen to it on Apple Podcasts. )

In our latest Trailblazers vodcast episode, we had a blast talking with Ryan Campion, VP of Strategy & Corporate Development at NexxtSpine.

NexxtSpine has been making waves in the medical device industry for 15 years, focusing on advanced 3D-printed solutions for spine surgeries.

From innovative technology to a unique approach to leadership, Ryan’s insights give us a fresh look at how NexxtSpine is reshaping healthcare and the medical tech industry.

Here are three highlights from our conversation with Ryan, along with tips and fun applications for leaders:

1. The Art and Science of 3D Printing in Spine Surgery

Highlight: NexxtSpine’s specialty in additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, allows them to create precision devices for spine surgery, pushing medical possibilities. They’re not just crafting devices—they’re actively working toward designs that enhance healing from the cellular level, backed by clinical trials.

Leader Tip: Embrace technology that enhances your team’s strengths. Like NexxtSpine, prioritize developing tools or methods that enable faster, more precise outcomes, whether that’s for your clients or internal projects. Innovation, when aligned with purpose, can accelerate your team's impact.

How to Make It Fun: Run a “Prototype Challenge” where teams pitch solutions to common challenges in your field. Give them creative freedom to come up with models, even if they’re rough drafts, and celebrate the potential in each idea. This can be a fantastic way to explore out-of-the-box thinking!

2. Embracing Uncertainty with a Game Plan

Highlight: Ryan shared how the medical device industry, once considered “safe,” now faces constant change. For him, thriving in uncertainty means being the safe haven for his team, reminding them that change, while inevitable, is an opportunity to grow stronger together.

Leader Tip: Cultivate resilience in your team by normalizing change as a part of growth. Encourage adaptability through regular “What’s Next?” meetings that invite input on upcoming changes or challenges. This helps everyone view changes as part of the ongoing journey, not isolated disruptions.

How to Make It Fun: Try a “Surprise Scenario Drill” where each team member responds to an unexpected shift (think role-play!). This gives a lighthearted approach to practicing agility and adds some humor to the usual workday.

3: Work-Life Balance Isn’t Just a Perk—It’s Essential

Ryan shared his approach to maintaining morale and fostering resilience within his team, especially after the challenges everyone faced during COVID. For Ryan, work-life boundaries aren’t optional; they’re essential for a thriving workplace. He emphasizes that while he personally enjoys staying “always on,” he doesn’t expect that from his team. In fact, he actively encourages everyone to set boundaries and prioritize their well-being.

Leader Tip: Set clear, encouraging boundaries for your team and lead by example. Even if you’re fully invested in the work, remember that everyone’s productivity and creativity can increase when they’re rested and rejuvenated. Make it a regular habit to check in with your team on their well-being, not just their work.

How to Make it Fun: Organize wellness-focused team days that emphasize self-care, like guided mindfulness breaks, outdoor team lunches, or a no-meeting Friday. Consider making wellness goals part of your quarterly check-ins, giving team members fun incentives for prioritizing self-care—whether that’s extra break time or a “leave early” pass.
